Work Statement:
In my photography, I explore the intricacies of traditional Chinese weddings, focusing on the ritual of tea toasting where newlywed couples pay tribute to the husband's parents. This cultural practice, while seemingly joyous, reveals the underlying pressures faced by Chinese girls to conform to marriage expectations. By juxtaposing this ceremony with the weighty presence of the word "joy," I invite viewers to reflect on the conflicts between societal norms and individual desires. Through my work, I aim to challenge traditional gender roles, spark conversations about self-determination and gender equality, and advocate for a more inclusive society where women can shape their own destinies.
